QUEER KENTUCKY · KENTUCKY’S ONLY LGBTQ+ NEWSROOM
COMMUNITY JOURNALISM PROGRAM
Training queer Kentuckians to tell the stories only they can tell.
Queer Kentucky is training 8 impacted Kentuckians to tell the stories only they can tell.
We are launching our first-ever Community Journalism Program. Here is what it is, why it matters, and how you can help make it happen.

What Is It?
The Community Journalism Program is an 8-week, fully virtual journalism training built for people who are already embedded in the communities we cover.
We are not just looking for people who can write. We are looking for people who are living inside the stories that do not get told: people in recovery, people doing harm reduction work, people in rural parts of Kentucky who see exactly what is happening around them and have never had the tools to report on it.
When those people learn to report, the stories they produce are different. More accurate. More complete. The kind of stories that do not get written any other way.
What Participants Get
- 8 weeks of training, fully virtual, with a real editor
- A $500 stipend for their classroom time
- A byline on Queer Kentucky
- A $250 payment when their story is published on Queer Kentucky
- Real journalism skills they can keep building on, writing for us, other outlets, or on their own terms
This is not a one-time payment. Participants walk away with practical skills to keep generating paid writing work, for us, other outlets, or on their own terms.
Where Things Stand
We are actively fundraising to make this program happen.
Our community goal is to raise $5,000 of our $15,000 total program budget by July 4th. The rest will be covered by grant funding we are actively pursuing. Every dollar raised here strengthens those grant applications. Funders want to see that our community is already invested before they commit.
What Is Coming
Once funding is secured, we will open applications. This page will be updated with everything you need to know, including application details and eligibility requirements, program dates and schedule, and who to contact with questions.
Stay tuned.
