About This Opportunity
Eastern Kentucky is home to an LGBTQ+ community that is often undercovered, overlooked, and misrepresented in media. Queer Kentucky exists to change that. We have dedicated funding for stories rooted in Eastern Kentucky, and we want to hear from writers who know and care about this region.
Stories can be journalistic, community-based, historical, or arts and culture focused. They must center LGBTQ+ people and communities in the region.
What We Are Looking For
Strong pitches may include:
- Reported stories on LGBTQ+ health, safety, or community life in Appalachian and Eastern Kentucky
- Community profiles, oral histories, or features centered on LGBTQ+ people in the region
- Arts and culture coverage of LGBTQ+ events, venues, or makers in Eastern Kentucky
- Historical stories about LGBTQ+ life in the mountains and coalfields
- Stories about rural LGBTQ+ organizing, mutual aid, or community building
Eligibility
Open to journalists and community writers at All types of experienced writers. No journalism degree required.
If we have not worked with you before, you will need to share a writing sample that reflects the kind of work you are pitching. Academic papers, creative writing, and promotional content do not qualify.
