Privacy Policy

Queer Kentucky is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit newsroom. We built the Queer Kentucky mobile app so our community can read our journalism, save stories for later, and get pinged when something matters. This privacy policy explains what the app does with information and what it does not.
We wrote this in plain English. If anything is unclear, email us at [email protected] and we’ll explain.
What the app collects
A push notification token. If you opt in to notifications inside the app, your phone generates an anonymous token and sends it to a small server we run on Cloudflare. We use this token only to deliver pushes to your phone. The token is not tied to your name, email, location, or any other personal information. If you turn notifications off in the app, the token is deleted from our server.
Your notification preference. When you pick “Every new story” or “Breaking news only,” we save that choice next to your push token so we send you the right pings. We also save the choice locally on your phone.
Your saved articles. When you bookmark a story, the bookmark stays on your phone. We never see it. There is no server-side sync.
What the app does not collect
- Your name
- Your email address
- Your location
- Your age
- Your IP address (beyond what Cloudflare’s standard network logs capture for one to two weeks)
- Your reading history
- Your contacts, photos, microphone, camera, or any other phone permission
- Any advertising identifiers
Information we get from WordPress
Our website, queerkentucky.com, runs on WordPress and uses standard server-side analytics to count page views and figure out which stories people read. When the app loads a story, it fetches that story from queerkentucky.com, and our website logs that request the same way it would log a request from a web browser. We use this only in aggregate to understand what coverage matters to our community.
When the app opens an external site
A few buttons in the app open your phone’s browser:
- Support Queer journalism opens Donorbox. Donorbox handles donations and has its own privacy policy.
- Subscribe to the newsletter opens our Letterhead newsletter signup. Letterhead has its own privacy policy.
- Visit queerkentucky.com and Follow on Instagram open our website and our Instagram profile. Those services have their own privacy policies.
- Open this story on queerkentucky.com opens the article on our website.
When you tap any of these, what happens after is between you and that other service. We do not pass anything about you through the link.
Who we share information with
We do not sell your information. We do not share your push token or notification preference with any third party for any purpose other than running the app itself. The only entities that touch the data are:
- Cloudflare, which hosts our small notification server. Cloudflare may log standard network metadata (timestamps, request paths) under their own privacy policy.
- Expo Push Service (a service operated by Expo), which we use to deliver push notifications. When we send a push, the message and your token pass through Expo’s service to Apple’s APNs or Google’s FCM, which then deliver the message to your phone. Expo’s privacy policy applies to that handoff.
Your rights
You can turn off notifications at any time from the app’s Support tab. When you do, your token is removed from our server. You can also revoke notification permission from your phone’s system settings, which has the same effect.
If you live in California or another jurisdiction with specific privacy rights, you have whatever rights local law grants you, and you can email us to exercise them.
Children
Queer Kentucky is journalism for adults. The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app and provided information, email us at [email protected] and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top and post the new version here. For significant changes, we will note the change inside the app the next time you open it.
