Silas House Publishes His Debut Poetry Collection, “All These Ghosts”
Kentucky Poet Laureate Silas House, known for his novels and essays about Appalachian life, has released his first full-length collection of poetry, All These Ghosts.
Published by Blair on Sept. 9, the book blends House’s Appalachian upbringing with themes of nature, grief and community. The collection includes the poem he read at Gov. Andy Beshear’s 2023 inauguration and an interview with fellow author Barbara Kingsolver.
House, a New York Times bestselling author, has written eight novels, including Clay’s Quilt, Southernmost and Lark Ascending. His work has appeared in Time, The Washington Post and The Atlantic. He became Kentucky’s poet laureate in 2023 and was a Grammy finalist for producing the first country music video to feature a gay love story.
Early praise for the collection has come from prominent voices. Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Jason Isbell called House “a southern institution” and said the book is “heartbreaking in all the best ways.” Kingsolver described the poems as filled with pride and authenticity, while Kentucky Poet Laureate Kathleen Driskell noted the “Wordsworthian eloquence” in the debut.
The hardcover, priced at $22.95, is available now.
