Queer Kentucky Nominated for GLAAD Award for Outstanding Independent Journalism

Queer Kentucky has been nominated for GLAAD’s top journalism award — Outstanding Independent Journalism — recognizing the newsroom’s reporting on LGBTQ+ life, politics, and public health in Kentucky.

The nomination places Queer Kentucky among the most impactful LGBTQ+ journalism organizations in the country. GLAAD is the leading national organization advancing LGBTQ+ media representation, accountability, and advocacy, with journalism honors that recognize reporting increasing visibility, accuracy, and public understanding of LGBTQ+ people and issues.

Founded by Editor-in-Chief Spencer Jenkins in 2018, Queer Kentucky is Kentucky’s only statewide LGBTQ+ newsroom. In 2025 alone, our reporting, digital magazines, and community projects reached more than 8 million people, with coverage spanning legislative tracking, health equity research, harm reduction initiatives, and cultural storytelling rooted in Kentucky communities.

“This nomination is a recognition of what local queer journalism can do when it’s trusted, resourced, and allowed to tell the truth,” said Missy Spears, Executive Director of Queer Kentucky. “Our work exists because Kentucky’s LGBTQ+ communities deserve coverage that is accurate, affirming, and unafraid.”

Jenkins said the national recognition is especially meaningful for a newsroom operating in a politically hostile environment.

“Too often, stories from states like Kentucky are ignored or flattened,” he said. “This nomination affirms that our stories matter nationally — and that queer people here are shaping the broader conversation.”

Queer Kentucky’s Board of Directors Vice President John Reisert noted the sustained impact behind the recognition.

“This honor reflects years of consistent reporting, deep community partnerships, and a commitment to public service journalism,” Reisert said. “It’s proof that investing in local LGBTQ+ media has real, measurable impact.”

Winners will be announced at the upcoming GLAAD Media Awards ceremony later this year.
