Lookout Bowling Green, there’s now competition for the best local pride! Glasgow, known for its annual Scottish-inspired Highland Games, now has a new festival making its way to the historic downtown square. In June 2022, Glasgow-Barren County will host its first-ever pride festival!
Yes, we’re just as shook as you are, and even more excited. What started as an inkling of an idea during a reproductive rights march on the square quickly blossomed into a world of “This is something we can do with the community’s support.”
On November 9th, 2021 a Facebook page was created and the growth took off from there. Housing almost 400 local supporters in the Glasgow area with numerous people offering to help with planning and putting in work to make this festival a thing – it’s officially happening!
On March 15, the state of Kentucky officially approved shutting down the Glasgow Square on June 25, 2022, for Glasgow-Barren County to host its first annual pride festival.
Original organizers, Jessicia Murray and Shannon Rust have worked their queer and queer-friendly asses off to get this festival up and running. When speaking to Jessicia the day after approval you could hear the relief in her voice.
“This is a huge deal for Barren County, it’s about time,” Murray said while going over some of the specifics for the festival that we’ve been anxiously waiting for since the Facebook launch and we’re gagged.
Spaces for vendors are already being booked and you can claim your space by visiting the registration form. Maybe you’re a local business or organization in the Glasgow area that wants to get in on the fun or maybe you’re an entertainer looking to shock an audience. This part is still a work in progress, but things are looking up when it comes to a space to showcase that local talent we’re dying to see.
Now it’s time for what we locals can do. First of all, use that mouth that we use for so many other -ahem- things! Spread the word about Glasgow stepping up for their LGBTQ+ community and creating a much-needed safe space that we don’t have to drive 30+ minutes to find. Volunteer on a local level and get these planning efforts up and running. Donate your muscles for day-of help, donate funds to help this festival get off the ground, and most of all SHOW UP!
For vendor space and to stay up to date on what’s happening follow Glasgow-Barren County Pride Festival 2022 on Facebook and Glasgow_Barrencountypride on Instagram. Werk it queer fam and let’s give Glasgow something to flip out about!
