The eerie invisible fog of hate has loomed over the country since November 5. Even those that live in liberal states have started to feel the weight of millions of votes cast against their existence. Will it even matter what state a person lives in when the Wehrmacht starts their march? Probably not, but we can all be sure that Kentucky's streets will be some of the first they march on. Or maybe I’m overdramatic and the new regime won’t follow through with Project 2025.. One can dream.⁠

I wish I could say I have no reason for being so dramatic, but sadly, a deep lurking fear I have felt for the last 10 years may become reality. I spent almost eight years in Canada trying to run from the red state of hate, wishing I could just be myself in peace.⁠

“I hope you get sent to Kentucky and get murdered for being trans! I hope you fucking die for being trans!” — words once screamed at me from the other side of an apartment door in Toronto. Solidifying that state of fear I had for ever returning home. I was able to stay in Canada for years after, however the fear of those words has not left my mind a single day since they were uttered.

LINK IN BIO ✍️ @belletownsendky Keturah Herron made history in 2022 as Kentucky’s first openly LGBTQ+ woman elected to the House of Representatives, and again in 2024 as the state’s first openly LGBTQ+ woman elected to the Senate. She also carries the identities of being Black, raised in a single-parent household in Richmond, and having a family impacted by the opioid crisis and the criminal justice system. Herron’s journey from court-designated worker to policy strategist, and ultimately, to legislator, reflects both personal growth and an unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and the vision of a better world.

LINK IN BIO ✍️ @tomlallyky In the past year, the number of our chronically homeless neighbors has increased by about 200%. While shelters and other resources are making great strides to meet the need while bearing the brunt of Kentucky’s criminalization of homelessness, their work cannot be done alone.

A lengthy anti-crime law known as the “Safer” Kentucky Act took effect in July of 2024. A portion of the law prohibits “unlawful camping,” making it illegal to sleep or camp on a street, sidewalk, area under a bridge or underpass, path, park, cemetery, or other area designated for use by pedestrians or vehicles.

LINK IN BIO Curtis Galloway, founder of Conversion Therapy Survivor Network, says because of this nuance, the laws don’t have much impact. “Ninety-five percent of people [in the network] would not fall under the protections of the laws that are in place.”⁠

Almost 80 survivors in Galloway’s network have reported going through conversion therapy and many of them by religious leaders. In Nebraska, one survivor reported experiencing conversion therapy at Parkview Baptist Church. In Charleston, at Christ Temple Church. And in California, at Living Waters. All three churches did not respond to requests for comment.⁠

Galloway’s organization hosts Survivor Sundays online with 15-20 people showing and more and more people joining. “We have to add another weekly meeting,” he says.
