WHO WE WORK WITH
Queer Kentucky is growing into a nationally recognized journalism organization, and our assignments reflect that. We prioritize writers (community writers or trained journalists) who can write a piece filled with heart and help uplift the LGBTQ+ people of Kentucky while also being able to avoid opinion, and come ready to back up every fact they mention. And if you come from the impacted community you are writing about, that only makes your story stronger and excites us about working with you even more. For all writers, we ask that you pitch a story you have the experience and knowledge to pull off. We’re a small team, so we are very intentional with how many folks we can assist with hands-on coaching at a time. We don’t want to let you or our audience down.
If you’re a talented writer who has the chops, plans to work with us regularly, and would like more training around the basics of journalism, working with sources, and citing your work, we have access to the Earn Your Own Press Pass course. It’s a four hour online course that educates you on the very basics of what a reported story or profile needs. Once we’ve established a relationship and you want to strengthen your skillset, we are happy to get you enrolled and pay you for your time going through it.
We love our poets, academics, and creative writers who want to step into the world of queer journalism. We can’t, however, accept a creative piece, academic paper, and similar work for a writing sample. As incredible a writer as you may be, it can’t tell us whether you can pull off a reported story, a data piece, or a community profile. The good news is there are more ways than ever to build those examples. Practicing with your own Substack, growing experience with a writers group, or just writing the story you wanted to tell anyway and submitting it for consideration are all great ways to see if we are a good fit for each other, while also building you a portfolio.
