Reimagining Masculinity: Trans Felicity

This story is part of ISSUE 05: Reimagining Masculinity. The magazine is available for purchase here.
Shooting film since 2012, Lane Levitch finally steps in front of his own camera. Before, he didn’t like seeing how the world perceived him. His face so permanent on negative strips. After receiving a gender affirming surgery in August 2022, Lane started documenting his healing process and stepping into his confidence. He was taking digital photographs until the passing of his life-long friend, Henry Berg-Brousseau, when he switched to film. The digital photos felt too casual for a surgery that’s so life changing. He now embraces the permanence of film.
Trans Felicity is a celebration of transgender joy and self respect. Taking self portraits in nature, Lane gets to do something he always dreamed of: Being shirtless with the sun touching his skin. Trans Felicity is meant to stand still in time, to bottle up the happiness from the year following surgery. To be a reminder for Lane that he has come a long way in his gender journey, but also as a reminder to trans youth that it does, in fact, get better.
